What’s with the iPhone 3.0 software?

After having time to reflect on Apples announcement for the new iPhone software I have a few questions

Firstly, most of the new features, such as MMS and advanced Bluetooth, will be available to existing users of the 3G, so why did we have to wait to 3.0 if the features, why weren’t they included in the 2.0 software update?
The only thing I can think of is that Apple knew that if they released everything in 2.0 there would be nothing left for them to do in 3.0, but that would mean they have stopped innovating. They must have known that the fetures would be coming otherwise they wouldn’t have included the advanced chips needed to support them, but if they wanted to keep the futures, why not keep the chip upgrades for a 3rd version of the hardware?

Second, what’s left for a hardware revision? – if most (or all) the futures announced at the apple event will be available to iPhone 3G users and some of the features will will be available to first gen iPhones, what will be added to the Next version of the hardware? The only thing I can think of is that there will be video on the new phone or at least a better camera.

There has to be a new hardware version sometime this summer because people in the US are still using the original iPhone and the 2 year contract will be running out then and so Apple and AT&T will be looking to find a way for them to upgrade to a new phone from them, iPhone 3.0 software is a free upgrade to all users, so that won’t be enough.

Whatever happens, I really do think there will be a new hardwear version out this summer and I know I’ll be getting it when it does, because it’s goanna have to be amazing.
